Staff In-Service Training Requirements

Assisted living facilities are required to provide various in-service training to facility staff. Each individual in-service training requirement may vary due to differences in staff qualifications. The following list identifies the six (6) in-service training requirements pursuant to Chapter 58A-5.0191(2), F.A.C. The six in-service training requirements are intended to be provided by the ALF administrator or manager; however, the in-services may also be obtained from qualified training providers , or persons who have successfully completed the ALF Core Training Program.

1. Infection Control, Universal Precautions, and Facility Sanitation Procedures

Length:

1 hour

When:

Before providing personal c are to residents

Who:

Staff who provide direct care to residents

Exempt:

Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, and Home Health Aides

Note:

Documentation of compliance with the staff training requirements of 29 CFR 1910.1030, relating to blood borne pathogens, may be used to meet this requirement.

2. Reporting Major Incidents, Adverse Incidents, and Facility Emergency Procedures

Length:

1 hour

When:

Within 30 days of employment

Who:

Staff who provide direct care to residents

Exempt:

None

Note:

Training should include chain-of-command and staff roles relating to an emergency evacuation

3. Resident Rights , and Reporting Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation

Length:

1 hour

When:

Within 30 days of employment

Who:

Staff who provide direct care to residents

Exempt:

Persons who have completed the ALF Core Training Program

4. Resident Behavior and Needs , and Assistance with the ADLs

Length:

3 hours

When:

Within 30 days of employment

Who:

Staff who provide direct care to residents

Exempt:

Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, and Home Health Aides

5. Safe Food Handling Practices

Length:

1 Hour

When:

Within 30 days of employment

Who:

Staff who prepare or serve food

Exempt:

Persons who have completed the ALF Core Training Program

6. Resident Elopement Response Policies and Procedures

Length:

1 hour

When:

Within 30 days of employment

Who:

All facility staff

Exempt:

None

Note:

All facility staff should be provided with a copy of the facility's resident elopement policies and procedures, and staff should demonstrate an understanding and competency in the implementation of these policies and procedures.
